St. Leonard’s Tower

You will find the ancient tower of St. Leonard or ‘the Clock Tower’ in the center of the town. It was built in about 1220 and has two working clocks on the tower.

Workhouse and Almshouses

A workhouse was built in 1837 in East Street by Newton Abbot Poor Law Union. It was a place where people who were unable to support themselves could go to live and work. On the other hand Almshouses were founded to serve shelter for needy people through charity. The Almshouses preserves its history long back from 1538. Marckrell’s Almshouses in Totnes road are the most noticeable of all Newton’s almshouses.

Bradley Manor

This is a medieval manor house sets amongst the woodland and meadows in the valley of River Lemon, just a half mile to the west of Newton Abbot. It is one of the smaller manor house of the 15th century. The architecture of the house seems to be influenced by Dartington hall. The house contains the collections of arts and crafts, furniture, and pre-Raphaelite paintings. Overall, it is a great historical place where one can find signs of Stone Age and Iron Age.

Old Forde House

This is a Grade I listed Jacobean former manor house in the town which was built in 1610. The Ford House is noted for its wood carving and plaster work. These days, this Forde House has become a perfect venue to celebrate functions, family get-together and business events.

Newton Abbot Town & GWR Museum

This Great Western Railway museum explores the town’s links with the railway. It has working single box and model of IK Brunel’s Atmospheric Railway. Tuckers maltings is one of the four malt houses in England that produces malt in the traditional way. They are known for coloured malts, wheat malt, Torrefied wheat and micronized maize. It is a great festival with full of malt beers filled with flavours and spirits.
